Gully Skiing Scotland on Telemark's Coire an t Sneachda

Telemark Skiing Coire an t Sneachda

Footage was taken last year in Coire an t Sneachda in Point half gully (so called because it's half a grade one climb). It was a stunning day on the tops with cloud in the valley and the snow was reasonably soft wind blown which is good for Scotland. Mike from G2 Outdoor took the footage on a go-pro head cam.

Charlie Whelan a real Shame!

A very "sad" article for all those river users that make the effort to co-operate! It smacks of the Big posh man looking down on the little poor man.

WITH the river frozen and the weather Arctic it may seem strange to most folk that it is about this time of year I start thinking about next season's salmon fishing on the Spey.
advertising
The reason for my thoughts wandering is because now the salmon have just finished spawning and my dogs' delight in picking up and eating the dead fish, most of them twice the size of anything I ever catch.
Next year though, I am hoping that a new trend which has angered many anglers on the River Findhorn does not become a big problem on the Spey.
I am talking about wild water rafting which seems to be a particular treat for stag and hen parties.
You can just imagine the peace and tranquility of the river broken with loud screaming and the number of rafts making fishing impossible.
For the first time ever last summer, our fishing at Grantown was interrupted, not by the slow swish of a canoe, but by a whole family of eight twirling around on a huge raft.
You may say that everyone has the right of access to our rivers and you would be right, but anglers are beginning to feel that the river is being taken over by people who, unlike them, don't actually pay a penny for its upkeep.
It is often thought that Scotland has a more sensible approach to river and land access than England and Wales, but that would be disputed by the angling fraternity.
Just recently, following a long and loud campaign by canoeists, the Welsh Assembly announced the results of their enquiry into river access.
To the horror of the canoeists and the delight of the anglers, the findings were that it would not be appropriate to allow river craft the unlimited access we have in Scotland.
In England, too, access is not unlimited. This makes sense because, as in Scotland, there are clearly some stretches of river where angling could become impossible if over-run by rafts and canoes. It does mean however that we can all sensibly share much of the river.
Although the number of canoes on the Spey has undoubtedly increased over the years, the anglers and canoeists seem to have sorted out a proper code of conduct.
There are designated areas for exit and entry and, in the main, the canoe will always ask the wading angler on which side he or she wants them to pass.
Regrettably, there are some canoeists who do not stick to the code.
I was reliably informed last year that a very famous female opera singer from New Zealand was so fed up with the constant interruption to her fishing from canoes that she has decided not to return to the Spey.
I don't need to remind people the enormous contribution that fishing brings to the Highland economy and anyone who decides not to come back is a blow for us.
It is surely time for something to be done and for all users of the river to make a contribution to its upkeep.
At present, the District Salmon Fisheries Boards provide £3.5 million for river management and hundreds of proprietors and angling associations like our own in Grantown, Boat of Garten and Aviemore pay for the upkeep too.
A simple licensing fee for all canoes and the mandatory tests and regulation for canoe guides would be a sensible step in the right direction.
If something isn't done soon, the river will be over-run with rafters and canoes, and fishing, which not only brings in so much cash, but is also Scotland's most popular outdoor activity will be in danger of being swamped.

If only he knew the truth!!

Telemark ski lessons Scotland

The original form of skiing invented around 300 years ago in the Telemark region of Norway. It was aimed at getting around the forests and valleys, but soon developed into a down hill technique that is still used today.
Far from the leather boots and skinny skis of yester years, we now scream on about plastic boots and fat carving skis. At home on the piste as in the back country, its G2’s chosen mode of transport for touring and ripping!

For telemark lessons and instruction G2 Outdoor have been providing telemark coaching for over ten years, for lessons call G2 on 01479 811008 or visit our website click here

Back to cairngorm weather

Now thats more like it! Back to what we know and love about scottich ski mountaineering. Windy and raining and can't see your hand in front of your face. But the clients still love it.

Took in the summit of Cairngorm today with a decent of the Ceist Gully. Snow was very heavy even on the summit and melting through all layers. It is part of the consolidation process even if it could be a little unstable today. If and when it turns cold again it will all stick together well.

Even though it was thick and heavy today my G3 Fevers eat it up no worries. They seem to love everything you can throw at them. Oh yes warm and dry in my Atom bibs and Spitz jacket as well.

Bring on more snow now!

Snowboard Instruction Aviemore, Cairngorm Mountain and the Lecht

Cairngorm Snowboard Instruction

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced snowboarder our friendly instructors will give you the skills and tools to progress on to the next level, all our instructors are BASI qualified or equivalent which means you will have an instructor trained to a very high level and not just a trainee who teaches for just a season.
We can provide a full package which includes snowboard, lift ticket and instruction or you can bring your own equipment, lessons on Cairngorm Mountain usually last for 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs in the afternoon. We try and start at 9am which allows us to miss the crowds of ski schools which start at 10am and will give us lots of room on the slopes.
Unlike other ski and snowboard schools if the weather is bad on Cairngorm Mountain we can change the venue to the Lecht ski area which is a superb area for beginners , or if there is no snow be prepared to go Rafting!
For more information or to book call Nick or Mike on 01479 811008 or email info@g2outdoor.co.uk

Great ski mountaineering conditions in scotland

Well the conditions continue to get better

Mark and myself headed for the Cromdale hills for a wee bit of touring. These hills are an under used resource and a great option for introductory trips. Rolling hills with some easy river line decents.

Take all the usual safety precautions with weather forecasts and avalanche reports and remember to take transceivers, shovels and probes.

Great snow skinning from the car and skiing all the way back.

Also remember if your looking for some instruction or guiding for ski mountaineering check out the G2 web site for details.

G2 Instructor profiles

Nick Etheridge (the Etherbeast)

Hi, I developed my love for the outdoors through skiing. I started skiing before I could walk and started ski teaching in 1991. Now employed by Basi (British Association of Snowsports Instructors) running Telemark instructor training courses.
Specialist areas include white water kayak play, winter ski touring and now enjoying sea kayaking expeditions for the last few years.

Mike Gale (the Otherbeast)

Hi, I never developed a love for the outdoors I just got into it for the sole purpose of being one better than Nick Etheridge. I started skiing before I could crawl and started ski teaching in 1990. Now employed by Wasi (World Association of Snowsports Instructors) running courses.
Specialist areas include being better than Nick at White water kayak play, ski touring and Telemarking and everything else except sea kayaking because that’s for old people.

Mark Ker

Mark is our Chief instructor/facilitator and is the current God of open boating in the world if not Aviemore. Marks other favourite pass times are playing the banjo, skinning animals and watching the film Deliverance!!!

Roy Henderson

Roy is our Chief badge collector. He has more qualifications than anyone in the world he has so many badges that he has two pairs of swimming trunks to sew his badges on. Roy is our God of Sea paddling and is the best sea paddle coach in the UK (might not be true but it seems to upset those that think they are).

Dave Felce

Every outdoor company has an old mountain goat and Dave is ours! We are currently waiting for a full reconstruction on Dave's knees before we let him loose on the hills again. Dave is currently the G2 promotions and event organiser and all round heavy metal lunatic.

Jerry Craig

Jerry is currently our biggest instructor and could beat anyone hands down in a red wine drinking competition.

Charlie Lowath

Charlie has been with us for 4 years and we are still trying to get rid of him. Charlie is currently our thinnest instructor preferring to spend his money on bikes and boats rather than food.

Sarah Swallow

At G2 we felt we had to become more inclusive and we needed to become more "PC" so we hired Sarah as our token female instructor. Sarah is our newest instructor and has taken over Charlie's role as "Tea boy". According to Sarah she is G2's best Kayaker and could kick the rest of our "butt's".

Scott Simon

Scott is probably the strongest man in the world and could easily take Jerry Craig on at a red wine drinking competition. Unfortunately Scott is an open boater and a Sea kayaker.
